"The Open World" for Brass Band [PDF]

The Open World is an exciting work for brass band that is inspired by open world video games such as “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,” and “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.” These types of games thrust the player into an unknown world of towns, caves, dungeons, and more, yet it is up to the player what they decide to do and where to go. The freedom provided by open world games allows for unique game experiences for each player and gives the games a feeling of vast exploration and discovery.

The Open World throws the listener straight into the sprawling world with a heroic fanfare, giving the sense of the thrill of the adventure to come. The opening fanfare is juxtaposed with a contrasting lyrical melody that is reminiscent of the towns and vast landscapes that one will encounter early on in their journey. The work then takes a dark turn as the tempo suddenly quickens, and we are met with the danger that is lurking in the shadows of this world. Dark caves, dungeons, monsters, and evil overlords become unavoidable, and the player has to overcome these obstacles in order to survive. After many trials and tribulations, the player is able to overcome the obstacles the world has thrown in their way, and is eventually able to triumph in the end.

The Open World was premiered by the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain on August 5th, 2023.
