Program Note:
Distant Mountains is a soundscape piece for wind ensemble. Rather than a traditional motivic-based development, this piece relies on texture, timbre, and slow harmonic changes to create the form of the piece. The music is meant to capture the image of vast mountain ranges that seem to go on forever in the distance and span across the horizon. I wanted to capture the beauty and stillness of the mountains, while also capturing the beauty and complexity of the nature that inhabits these mountains. Distant Mountains is an ode to the beautiful natural structures, and a reminder that the beauty of planet Earth may not last forever if we allow it to be destroyed.
Distant Mountains was selected as the winning composition for the James Madison University New Music for Wind Ensemble Competition in 2022, and received its premiere performance by the JMU Wind Symphony on April 6th, 2022.
